Having a second residence on your property is a fantastic idea for a variety of reasons. Some people build them for their elderly parents, such as this one created for a family’s mother-in-law, while others build them as guesthouses or to rent out as vacation homes. Ralph Jones Home Plans designed this little house, which is named the Hummingbird Cottage and measures 592 square feet in total. Janne Zaccagnino drew up the floor plans for the house, and because she knows the owner, she was able to view the finished product. It’s unusual for her to see her finished work in person, so it was particularly important for her to be able to do so when it was completed. A home like this could make an excellent retirement cottage, particularly for individuals who have family members who own land on which to build one.
Officials normally consider tiny houses built on foundations larger than 400 square feet to be lawful, but it’s always a good idea to check in your neighborhood to see what the rules are. With fresh grey siding and two entrances, one door in the front and a set of French doors in the back, this compact house looks excellent from the outside. It’s convenient to have two entrances to allow for more airflow and better circulation throughout the house. In the summer, these doors can be left open to allow cool air to enter by allowing the breeze to pass through in the evening and morning.
There is a covered porch on the front to access the front door, and there is a flat area on the back that will be used for a deck. The deck will be built off of the French doors, which will be a fantastic position for it off of the living room to expand the living space outdoors, as shown on the floor plans. Simply place an outdoor sofa and chairs there, and they’ll be able to enjoy it all summer long. Because to the glass panels in the French doors, the living room is light and airy. There’s also a row of windows above the entryway for additional light. The kitchen is similarly open to the living room, with a countertop extension that may be used as eating or working bar seats.
A built-in induction stove with a microwave and room for a full-size refrigerator are also included in the kitchen. A dishwasher and even an oven incorporated into the cabinets could also be fitted at some stage. The subway tiling and light fixtures provide some elegance and sophistication to the kitchen, and the front door, which has a glass pane and another window above it, offers some light as well.
The bedroom, like the kitchen, has large windows and plenty of natural light. They also added a fan to circulate the air and painted it a gentle blue color for a splash of color in the area. There is just enough room in the bedroom for a bed and bedside tables, as well as a walk-in closet with built-in storage and enough room for a dresser. The bathroom has a glassed-in shower stall, a sink vanity, and a toilet.
