David Chitwood, a Tennessean, came to California during the Land Act of 1820 to establish his claim. In search of two hundred wooded and rolling acres, he departed the area now known as Daniel Boone State Forest. The trees were so close together that it was dark even in the daytime. As trees were cut down to make space for farmland, they faced a monumental task.
The Chitwoods did it all: cleared land, constructed cabins and barns, tapped trees, made maple syrup, collected crops and meats, made quilts and furniture. Even after nearly two centuries, the farm is still serving a useful function. The Chitwoods are the epitome of genuine Hoosier hospitality, and they have given their visitors a taste of the state’s rich heritage. The owners built eight of the nine structures in their log cabin from scratch.
