The Pigeon Forge region of Tennessee is one of the most beautiful places in the United States, and it is also rich in history. The community in East Tennessee was known for its early iron forge and furnace. What was originally undeveloped land has since developed into a thriving commercial hub. The Cherokee and other eastern American First Nation tribes once used the area around present-day Pigeon Forge as hunting grounds.
In the latter part of the 1700s, the valley was made available for settlement with the signing of a treaty. The town’s initial enterprise, established by a man named Isaac Love in 1820, was a furnace and iron forge. Pigeon Forge derives its name from both the Little Pigeon River and the ironworks industry that began there. The banks of the Pigeon River were lined with beech trees in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Given that beechnuts were the bulk of the Passenger Pigeons’ diet, the river served as a natural resting place for the massive flocks of the sadly extinct birds.
